The Artwork
The photograph for The Hope artwork was taken by Not Even Wrong's Jonathan Daniel McLaughlin at Reynisfjara beach -famous for its black volcanic sand and rogue "sneaker waves"- in southern Iceland. The bleak and portentous nature of the photograph coupled with the fact that it was taken in early January 2020, a mere two months before a global pandemic sneaker-waved us all, made this an obvious choice for a work that deep-dives into the darker side of hope and how it can do unforeseen and irreparable damage to those under its influence.
The Lyrics
one more, one more, ...
one more day, try it again,
it’s not if, but a matter, of when.
one more week, try it again,
it’s not if, but a matter, of when.
one more month, try it again,
it’s not if, but a matter, of when.
…
one more year, try it again,
it’s not if, but a matter, of when.
…
it’s the hope that, (it’s always the hope)
it’s the hope that, (it’s always the hope)
it’s the hope that,
always-always, always-always, always-always,
does the harm.
you have to own it,
you have to commit,
you have to earn it,
such self-help shit.
it’s a journey,
it’s a fight,
it’ll be worth it,
such clichéd shite.
